There are a ton of different methods for contouring—and it seems like a new one makes its way across the Internet every few days. Most of them are time-consuming, some of them are wacky (WTF is “clown contouring”?!), and all of them are out of the question if you’re running late in the morning. But the latest contouring trend, known as “tontouring,” just might be the one you’ve been waiting for.
Tontouring involves strategically applying self-tanner, rather than darker shades of foundation, to add depth to the face. And because self-tanner lasts about a week with regular washing, you won’t have to give yourself extra time every morning to do your makeup—just tontour over the weekend and bask in your glowy, ultra-defined face all week long.
Melissa Carter, beauty guru and founder of Cocoa Brown Tan, is the brains behind this look. She shared her tips with the Daily Mail and said she swears by the method because “you only need to contour once a week, as opposed to every day, giving you the perfect makeup-free selfie.”

You start off by applying a gradual tanner all over your face to create a subtle glow as a base. Then, you apply a darker shade of self-tanner to the places you want to contour: your forehead, under your cheekbones, down the sides of your nose, and just under the tip of your nose. Carter suggests using a stippling brush (like Sephora Collection Pro Stippling Brush #44, $35, sephora.com) for the forehead and an angled contour brush (like Tarte the Slenderizer Bamboo Contour Brush, $34, sephora.com) for the cheekbones and nose. When it comes to self-tanners, we like the gradual Jergens Natural Glow FACE Daily Moisturizer Sunscreen ($7, drugstore.com) and the darker Paula’s Choice 365 Self-Tanning Foam ($16, paulashoice.com).
Just a note: Gradual self-tanners are pretty much goof-proof since they’re only adding a tiny hint of color to your face, but regular self-tanners can be streaky, especially if you don’t have much experience using them. Foam or mousse formulas are your best bet—they won’t settle into creases or lines, and they require less rubbing in than lotions, so you’re less likely to be left with streaks. To keep streakiness even more at bay, make sure you exfoliate to get rid of any flaky skin beforehand—and remember to only use a teeny tiny amount (about the size of a dime) of product when you’re applying the darker color to your forehead, nose, and cheekbones (trust us, a little goes a long way!). These tips will ensure that a natural-looking shade appears in a few hours.
